The Bite Shot  ·  A Small Group Cohort

Flash in 4 Weeks

A small group experience for food photographers who are brand new to artificial light and want to start making images that look how they envision.

Enrollment Closed

Doors open April 30th  ·  Cohort runs May 11 – June 5

You can see the image in your head.

Dynamic, intentional. That quality of light that makes you stop scrolling when you see it.

But every time you set up your flash you’re getting something too flat, or harsh, just… off. And the frustrating part is you’re not sure why, so you don’t know how to fix it.

Truth is, flash isn’t as hard as folks make it out to be, but it’s also not the most intuitive when you’re getting started. Without understanding the principles behind what light does and why, you’re guessing. And guessing with flash is wasting time you could be spending creating better images.

In just four weeks, in a small group of 10 photographers, you’ll go from guessing to knowing. Know what your light is doing, why it’s doing it, and how to shape it into the image you had in your head.

For food photographers who want to go from hoping they got the shot to knowing they got it.

By the end of Flash in 4 Weeks, you’ll know how to:

  • 01 Set up your flash and get it firing correctly from day one.
  • 02 Understand what your light is actually doing and why, so you can troubleshoot on the spot instead of guessing.
  • 03 Shape and control light with modifiers to get the specific look you’re going for.
  • 04 Recreate lighting setups with intention and consistency. Side light, back light, hi-key, low-key, hard light. You’ll understand the principles behind them, not just the steps.
  • 05 Make images that match what you envisioned before you ever picked up your camera.
  • 06 Walk into any space, any time, and know you can capture a great image.

This isn’t a passive experience.

You won’t just watch and hope. You’ll shoot, get feedback, and leave each week knowing exactly what to do differently.

01

The Curriculum

Each week you’ll be assigned video lessons to watch on your own schedule and an assignment to begin practicing techniques. By the time you show up to the live sessions, you’ll be ready to dig deeper into the concepts to help the learning stick and maximize your growth. The four weeks culminates in a final personal project that’s sure to be portfolio worthy.

02

Four Live Sessions with Joanie

Once a week for four weeks we meet live as a group. Every session starts with a live demo with Joanie, talking through every decision out loud. Then comes real, honest feedback on your images, which is the most important step in leveling up. This is where the learning goes from concepts to clicks.

03

A Community of Fellow Food Photographers

Flash in 4 Weeks is capped at 10 photographers. Small enough that you actually get to know each other and feel safe enough to share your work. This is an outstanding way to make new connections with people who are at the same place you are in their journey.
